The complete expression is: [You can't] have your cake and eat it too. The first two words are generally not spoken, but understood as part of the statement which means having more than your fair share. Depending on context, it can also take on a tone of congratulation/encouragement to someone for having it all.

Nice explanation, Dext. As an aside, I think the person(s) who originated the phrase needed a head examination. The metaphor just stinks: What did they think cake is for unless to eat it? Why would be eating it more than the fair share? Are you supposed to have a cake, and then look at it until it spoils? My thought is if you're going to make/get a cake, you should enjoy it--and this applies to life metaphorically, as well. So enough waxing philosophically over a silly metaphor I s'pose! LOL --one that probably some rich, lazy dolt on the riverbanks made up about self-deprivation as he was pondering how to cure his own guilty habit of being slothful but wealthy, and had not a clue what to do about it. :)
the expression also means if you eat your cake, you won't have any,ie if you if you break a law you won't have your freedom etc.
Lol it means, you can't have things both ways. For example you can't have a girlfriend and a mistress on the side or boyfriend whatever the case may be. I guess some can, but that is it in a nut shell, you can't have it both ways.

Well to a lot of people it means the best of both worlds like someone who is married and they are cheating on their spouse--they have their cake--the spouse dose not know-- and they are eating it to-- the one they are with and not suppose to be--get it.

In general it means, you can't have everything. Let me give you an example for your clarification. If you believe in two opposite things, which are exactly antithesis, then i can say to you , "you can't have your cake and eat it"... Like This is true, but it is false.

this answer confused me more than the question. i understand the question. your answer blows
My answer is very clear. It can also be used in making different choices in life . For example, we can't have a wife or husband and go around dating. i will give you another example. if your boss is asking from you to work more, and then pay you less, then you can say to your boss, sir you can't have your cake and eat it.
