Is It More Energy Efficient To Have A Lighter Colored Shingle On The Roof?
I live in northern CA and it gets very hot here--100 degrees or more for a week or more at a time.I have a small yard with no trees and my roof is exposed all day long. It has a dark brown colored shingle on it now, from almost 20 years ago.

It depends on your geographical location. In areas where you have colder winter temperatures and longer winters, darker shingles would prove best as a darker shingle absorbs more heat from the sun and the heat is transfered to the attic.
In the southern states lighter shingles reflect more of the suns rays and heat away from your roof and reduces heat build-up in your attic.

You are right. The dark colored shingles draw the heat in and the light colored one deflect the suns rays.

According to what i know white or light shingles help reflect the light and heat off the roof but to really knock it down a sod roof built over the regular roof will really cool it down.
