Well I would guess that since the dragon is a fictional character that resembles reptiles, you would think they resemble dino's since dino's look like giant reptiles.

Because in ancient times, people thought that mystical creatures they some how met or through word of mouth were all or al least a majority of them were large and differ from normal animals.
