Yuri Dolgoruki (1099-1157) was an important figure in Russian history and could be credited with expanding the Russian political boundaries to the north and east of Kiev the capital of the medieval state of Kievan Rus. Yuri Dolgoruki also known as George I of Russia reigned as the Grand Prince of Kiev (Veliki Kniaz) from 1149 to 1151 and again from 1155 to 1157.

At a young age Yuri was assigned by his father Vladimir Monomakh who founded the city of Vladimir the future capital of Russia in medieval times, to govern the northern provinces of the state known as Rostov-Suzdal; Yuri developed the Suzdal province and established several forts which led to the region growing in political importance.

Yuri founded many towns like Ksniatin, Pereslavl-Zalesski and Yuriev-Polski to the north of Kiev; he is also considered as having played a leading part in establishing several towns like Tver, Kostroma, Volgoda and Moscow which were to become the main cities of Russia in later times. A monument dedicated to Yuri Dolgoruki was erected in Moscow in 1954 and on the occasion of Moscow's 800th anniversary coins bearing his image were minted in 1947.
