Constipation is often confused with straining to urinate. Signs of constipation include less frequent attempts to defaecate, straining to pass stool, and only a small about of dry faeces being passed. Signs of urinary tract blockage include more frequent trips to the litter tray, only passing a small quantity of urine, painful urination, blood or pus in the urine. Complete urinary blockages are an emergency, and should receive immediate veterinary attention.
There are a few things you can do at home to relieve mild cases of constipation but if your cat is in pain, or not passing any stool at all, you will have to go to the vet.
To prevent constipation or relieve mild cases of constipation, you can increase the fibre in your cat's diet by adding cooked or canned pumpkin, bran or metamucil. Ensure there is plenty of clean fresh water available. Laxatives like liquid parafin and lactulose can be added to the food.
In more severe cases of constipation, the first step your vet will take to relieve the problem is to rehydrate your cat with IV fluids. Constipation dehydration and rehydration with IV fluids has the effect of rehydrating the faeces. Often this alone will allow the stool to be passed normally. The next step to relieving constipation is to administer an enema.
