The first man to go in space was the cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin when on April 12, 1961 he orbited the Earth and stayed in space for a period of 1 hour and 48 minutes. The name of the mission was Vostok 1 and it was the first ever manned space mission in the history of space exploration.

Yuri Gagarin was born at Klushino in Russia (then USSR) on March 9, 1934. After completing his education in 1955 he enlisted for the Soviet Air Force and was an accomplished pilot. He was selected in 1960 as one among 20 cosmonauts for the Soviet space program and along with another cosmonaut Gherman Titov as his backup was finalized for the first launch.

He was promoted from the rank of Senior Lieutenant to Major and ended his career in the Soviet Air Force as a Colonel. Gagarin died on March 27, 1968 in an accidental air crash.
