Dogs will lose some weight immediately after giving birth--this weight is mainly from the loss of the puppies and placentas. During nursing dogs need to be fed a high calorie diet--lactation is a huge energy drain--many people will continue feeding the mother a puppy food. Dogs should not become underweight during nursing--if this is the case seek veterinary medical attention.
