What Are Some Dos And Don'ts For Writing Dialogue?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Some Dos and Donts on writing dialogue are:

    Dos

Listen to how people speak, see the difference between conversation and dialogue (dialogue is a structured not a spontaneous thing).

Read other people's dialogue in novels, scripts etc

Use language that is appropriate to the character

Compare real speech to written dialogue to avoid writing in unnecessarily boring bits.

    Enjoy doing it

read it aloud or get someone else to, if you have a Mac, it will read it in a terrible monotonous voice which is great for testing how your work will sound read by the worst and least imaginative human being!

    Donts

Try to be perfect the first time around, writing dialogue is a craft that requires the refining of what's written, like someone working with wood would continue to shape the wood over time.

Be afraid to just type nonsense and craft something from that.

Buy a lot of books on dialogue writing, you already know inside how to do it.
