Herpesvirus can lead to corneal ulceration, crusty ocular discharge and a secondary bacterial conjunctivitis.  The treatment can include topical anti-bacterial ointment, topical anti-viral ointment, and oral antivirals like lysine or famciclovir.  There are several viruses that can result in feline upper respiratory complex--upper respiratory signs like sneezing, nasal discharge along with conjunctivitis.  If your cat is experiencing other upper respiratory signs it may need oral antibiotics too.
Herpesvirus is common in breeding situations, shelters, and catteries.  This is potentially a virus that when the cat is stressed or immunocompromised may cause recurrent infection.
