What Are The Hierarchy Of Needs?

Answer Question

The Hierarchy of Needs is a theory expressed by the psychologist, Abraham Maslow.  He set forth his ideas in a paper in 1943 called A Theory of Human Motivation.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is represented as a pyramid, a triangle with the most basic and necessary needs at the bottom, moving up to aesthetics needs. Someone who has not met their basic needs cannot be motivated by higher needs. The needs are as follows:

    Self-Actualisation
    Esteem
    Love/Belonging
    Safety
    Physiological Needs

I will explain each one briefly:

    Self-Actualisation:  morality, creativity, spontaneous behaviour

Esteem: confidence, self-esteem, respect for self and others

Love/Belonging:  Friendship, Family Relations and Sexual Intimacy with another.

Security: Security of self, possessions, others, health

Physiological: The most basic of all the needs, food, water, sex, breath, sleep, and removing waste from the body.

This is a set of needs based on human motivation, when a set of needs goes wanting, the progression to top level needs ceases and the focus goes to the lower level until it is met.

One confusing thing is when someone would rather have a book than a meal.

This is a theory which arranges needs in order to their importance and is presented in a triangular shaped diagram in accordance to their importance. That needs go from lowest to the highest level. These needs levels are physiological, safety and security, social, ego, and self-actualization. When a need is satisfied, it ceases to a motivator of behaviour. This theory is presented by Abraham's Maslow. Maslow's hierarchy is a useful tool for analyzing human motivation.

As far as the physiological needs are concerned that include basic requirements for food, clothing, shelter. These needs are also called the tissue needs. At the first level these needs must ordinarily be satisfied before they reach the high level it will influence the person's behaviour.

Safety needs stem from the desire for protection from various kind of situations and danger. For that purpose many of the people are especially concerned with being prepared for what the future may bring. For that the life insurance, pension plans, and health polices are their needs.
Social needs are satisfied by significant relationships with other people. Almost every one of us has a desire to belong, to be accepted, and to give and receive friendship and love.

Ego needs are also very important as the going age it include feelings of self-esteem, and self-respect. We always want to feel alike somebody; we need a status so special privileges need.

The need of self esteem, it involves the desire and a wish to succeed or to be recognized.
