Well everyone knows the answer, particularly American readers who have had to learn it by heart at school. There are 46 - and there are 46 because Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are not states. They are, technically speaking, Commonwealths.
Despite the title this doesn't give them any extra constitutional powers. It was a matter of choice at the end of the War of Independence. This is what they elected to be called. In choosing the title they were affirming that they were no longer colonies belonging to Great Britain and having to do the bidding of the King. They were in fact governed by the common consent of the people.
Virginia, called after the Virgin Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth the First was one of the original 13 members and hence the 13 stripes on the USA flag. It was the first of the States to openly proclaim itself a commonwealth.
