There has never been a war, in the accepted sense of the word, on Australian soil, though when the nation was being established in the 18th and 19th centuries there were skirmishes with the indiginous Aborigines known as the Australian Frontier Wars. The Australian colony was founded by the British, and some British troops were involved in these conflicts.
Australian forces have certainly been involved in war overseas. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACS) fought for the Allies in World War One, notably at the 1915-16 battle of Gallipoli in Turkey where they suffered relatively heavy losses. Gallipoli consituted Australia's first major military action. Australia was also involved in World War Two on the Allies'side fighting the Japanese in the Pacific.
Since 1951 Australia has been a formal military ally of the U.S under the ANZUS treaty and they supported America by sending troops to the Vietnam War. They were also involved in the Korean War, fighting under the banner of the United Nations.
