Acupuncture is a form of medicinal therapy existing in the coherent system of healing generally termed as Oriental Medicine. Acupuncture is believed to have originated in China at least 2,000 to 5,000 years ago. It is thus one of the oldest medical procedures in the world.

The medical therapy of acupuncture is a group of procedures, the most significant of which is to penetrate the skin at certain defined points called meridians with thin, metallic needles. This stimulation is intended at influencing the vital energy flowing through the body of a person. Traditionally only metallic needles were used for this kind of stimulation. But of late other methods of stimulation are also available in acupuncture including introduction of various herbs, magnets, electricity and lasers.

According to acupuncture there are two opposing forces in the body called yang and yin. Disease, illness and pain are the result of imbalances in these two forces and acupuncture tries to recover the lost balance through stimulations in different power points.

Acupuncture is a medical treatment that is often called a complimentary treatment or an alternative treatment as it is not based on the principles of western medicine. It is actually very ancient and originated in China over 5000 years ago.

The practice of acupuncture involves putting fine needles at key points all over the surface of the skin. The purpose is to restore the balance of life force that is thought to flow along channels in the skin known as meridians. Each of the meridians is believed to have its own pulse – six in each wrist.

Traditional acupuncture therapists are very skilled and have a set pattern of points to use to treat a whole range of different illnesses. Many people report that the treatments have worked for them but clinical trials haven't really shown any effect that is greater than placebo for many illnesses except pain. Stimulating the skin with fine needles has been shown to stimulate the production of endorphins, chemicals in the body that are natural pain killers.
