    Gael is a name of Old English and French origin.  It can befit a boy as well as a girl. The name can serve as a first name as well as a surname. Gael incidentally is a small commune in France. It can also refer to the Gaelic speaking celt of Scotland, Ireland, or the Isle of Man. A Scottish highlander is referred to as Gael.  

    A famous variant of the name Gael is Gale.  Other variations of the name "Gael" include Gaal, Gal, Gabo, Gall, Gail etc. The first instance of the Gael family is recorded in Normandy. It is reported that some of the first settlers in the US was in the middle of the 17th century. The name and the surname have been used rarely in the past few years, especially the last decade.
