How Do You Make Mulled Wine?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

You can buy a bottle of mulled wine and just warm it up in a saucepan. It doesn't taste or smell quite the same, though. The next simplest way is to buy a bottle of good red wine and a sachet of mulled wine spices. Heat this gently with about 50 ml mixed water and orange juice, 2-3 tablespoons sugar and a good slug of Grand Marnier, Tia Maria or sloe gin. Add a sliced orange and heat gently for about 20 mins without boiling – this serves six.
If you want to do the whole thing from scratch, you can put in your own spices. Nutmeg and cinnamon are usually used, and some cooks use ground ginger. If you go to the BBC website bbc.co.uk/food you can find a good, authentic recipe. Otherwise the book "Delia Smith's Christmas", also published by the BBC, is the best guide to mulled wine and Christmas fare generally.
