What Are The Possible Impacts Associated With The Construction Of A Dam?

Answer Question

The first and foremost important impact associated with the construction of a dam is the supply of electricity without having pollution. Apart from that, the use of dams is beneficial in order to protect from flooding and to make water available for agricultural as well as other human needs.

However, dams have significant contribution to human lives, but also there are debates whether the positive impact of dams are actually outweighed by negative effects.

Quite dramatically damming has consequence on nature of the environment including both upstream and downstream of the dam. Prior to the construction of a dam, the river flows in its own melody, whereas, the construction of dam damages the tune of flowing by restricting it to a particular flow rate in general. On the other hand, the flow is regulated in such a manner that the dam can divert the entire flow for other usages making no flow in the original channel beneath the dam.

The temperature of the water flowing after the dam placement is not varied seasonally as compared to the natural free-flowing water. The chemical condition of water has also been changed due to the placement of dam hampering the natural habitat out there. Apart from that, the water impoundment behind a dam may cause the velocity of water to drop into it leading to an increase in the erosive potential of the river resulting in the erosion of channel and river banks.
