A wireless router basically is a computer networking gadget which works by buffering and forwarding statistics packets transversely over an internet work towards their objective, via a method known as routing.

Routing takes place at level three of the OSI seven-layer protocol stack. A router plays the part of an intersection amid the two or more networks to buffer and transmit data packets between them. A router is dissimilar from a switch or a hub since it functions on layer 3 of OSI model, where as a switch functions on layer two and a hub functions on layer one.

The initial internet router was created at the BBN as part of their contract to create the resourceful Arpanet. During the initial phase of routing, general purpose mini-computers were used as routers.
