Packing for a cruise is not much different than packing for a trip overseas; along with the clothes, travel documents, money, accessories, gadgets like camera, medications if needed and other odds and ends that you would not like to leave behind. However many people have realized it the hard way that over packing is a common occurrence not only in terms of extra baggage charges but also in terms of mobility as well as increasing the chances of the lost luggage scenario.
The clothes part causes much confusion as many think they need to dress differently daily; most cruise veterans however say that barring two or three evenings most of the times a casual resort attire is the best option on board ship. The weather would of course be a determining factor and if one is going on a cruise to Alaska or somewhere similar a warmer outlook comprising sweaters and jackets would be practical.
For summer cruises the usual clothes like T shirts, shorts, a hat, sunglasses and a bathing suit for a quick dip would be ideal. Evening time on most cruises demands a formal get up, but there is no need to panic and buy a tuxedo or an evening gown as one can safely rent these things on board. Last but not the least; do not forget to mark all luggage items properly externally as well as internally.

Yes, it depends on where you are going. You don't want to pack a two piece swimsuit when you're having a trip to Alaska, do you?
Packing for a cruise depends on where you are going. Are you interested in dining the dining room or are you happy with just the buffet. Basically, you pack as you would for any other vacation.
