I Sleep Eat, How Can I Stop This?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

I agree with dietguru but I want to share something with you. My father when he was in his teens used to sleep eat. My grandfather not only locked up the fridge and cabinets, he put on a siren. If my father didn't wake up from it then my grandfather made sure he did! I apologize if it seems like I am poking fun at a serious situation. Try a sleep study or counseling. I know how hard it is to lose weight or even to maintain so I cannot imagine how difficult it would be counting calories of an unknown. It isn't like you leave the wrapers out so can count in the morning.

To indirectly address the issue, place locks on your fridge and cabinets.  Do not leave food accessible at night without having to use a key.  Even then, you may sleep walk over to the place where you store the key and then unlock the fridge.  People have been known to take entire car rides while sleep walking, so don't underestimate you subconscious.

This is officially called nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder, or NS-RED. You may want to consider a stay at a sleep research center where they will monitor brain activity while you sleep through the night and may single out the cause.

Alternative solutions would be to seek counseling or stress management. Also, eliminating caffeine and alcohol should be done as a first step if you consume these substances.
