Bruxism is mostly an unconscious process during which an individual clenches or grinds his teeth. This is mostly happened during sleep, but it may occur during day time and in awakening state as well. It is supposed to be an unconscious act for relieving aggression, anxiety or anger.
Bruxism is known to be the oldest listed disorder. It is so prevalent that almost one among four adults bruxism occurs. It also occurs among children and adolescents. Individuals do not have any conscious recognition in the most of the cases of bruxism until the teeth get damaged.
In most of the time, bruxism is considered to be the manifestation of stress. In some other cases, it may be derived from the abnormal occlusion. The main symptoms associated with bruxism are as follows:
• Dull headaches
• Earaches
• Sore in face muscles
• Pain in face muscles
• Exhausted facial muscles
• Locking, popping and clicking of the jaw
• Loss of enamel
• Loosened teeth
• Fractured teeth
Dentists can identified whether the patient has bruxism or not from few symptoms like ear infection, dental infection and temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ).
