Were I to be in the process of learning COBOL, I would initially choose, "Java for RPG and COBOL Programmers Self-Study Workbook, Answers Version, by Phil Coulthard & George Farr. ISBN:09684578-04-SKU:5003 on Sale for $9.95 at MC PRESS online at link below.

Also, I would get Mastering Cobol Programming (Palgrave Master)-Paperback, by R. Hutty and Mary Spence. ISBN-10:033368061 and ISBS-13: 978-0333681060 at Amazon. Reviews are good.

Besides getting these and similar books, I might find in a library or at my local bookstore, I would also use the website called, The  COBOL Center infogoal.com. This is a website filled with COBOL information. There are many different articles about companies who use COBOL, for instance the Wachtovia Bank uses COBOL to manage risks and reduce costs. Mike Murach & Associates, publishers of computer books recently published their own book, Murach's Mainframe COBOL, which tells the story of how IBM mainframe shops need COBOL to function properly. There is a lot of information about COBOL in  all the articles on this site.
