The blue whale is the largest mammal that has ever lived and it has achieved its great size because of its aquatic lifestyle. It could not survive without the support that the water in the sea gives its great bulk.
The whale is a vast creature with a long, slightly tapepered body which does give it some streamlining as it swims through the water, and the head makes up just less than a quarter of its total body length.
The blue whale is a blue grey colour with a lighter grey in a patched or mottled patter on a darker background.
Although it looks extremely fierce and threatening, the blue whale is harmless to umans and other fish - it feeds on diatoms, microscopic creatures that it filters out of the sea water through its balleens, thick brushes in the front of its mouth. It filter feeds most of the time to gain enough nourishment to keep up its massive bulk.
