Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is a major ship canal, and was one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken.
The canal is made up of two artificial lakes, several improved and artificial channels and three sets of locks.
The Panama Canal Authority decide on the tolls for the canal. Tolls are based on vessel type, size, and the type of cargo carried. The most expensive toll to date was charged on May 30 2006, to the container ship 'Maersk Dellys', which paid $249,165 for passage. The least expensive toll was 36 cents, to American adventurer Richard Halliburton. He swam the canal back in 1928. The average toll is about $54,000.
The canal still has great success, more than ninety years after its opening. Despite the fact that the size and design of ships have changed along with world shipping since the canal was designed, it still continues to be a vital link in world trade, and carries more cargo that ever before, with less overhead.
