How Do You Properly Dry A Fresh Abalone? Proper Procedures And Methods Appreciated Please?

    There are many different methods of drying an abalone but the most extensively applied method is the sun drying method. The drying process is also and art, it is extensively practiced in South Africa. The sun drying process takes up to two months.

    The abalone is normally shucked, and later on is simmered in preservation chemicals, and hung on racks in a room heated up to 38 degrees Celsius. It is left there to dry for a period of three to four weeks.

    Dried Abalone can be conserved for months or even years and later on can be rehydrated and returned to its original form. This method is vital and is usually used in smuggling methods. Primarily, live or frozen abalone carries a pungent and typical smell hence is tricky transport and ship them unnoticed.
