True crime is book belonging to the non-fiction genre in which the writer uses an actual crime scenario and real people to narrate his plot. The feel of the book is highly factual or intensely speculative. A crime reporter often indulges in writing such books. Crime books like instant recipes have plots which are cooked to capitalize on popular demand. There are other true crime books which go back into history of alleged crimes and homicides and investigate the mater. Stories of deaths of celebrities, brutal homicides, unsolved murders etc are the norm of true crime books.
Jack Webb's 'The Badge' and Truman Capote's 'In Cold Blood' are two of the noteworthy novels of the true crime genre. Especially after the success of the movie "The Silence of the Lambs," in the year 1991, the genre of true crimes focusing on serial killers has peculiarly caught the fancy of readers. One cannot quote the exact figure of people who read true crime novels but the fact that "Fatal Vision" a true crime book of 1983, sold 2.3 million copies alone in 1984 Signet Edition, speaks volumes about readers' fascination to read about the murky side of crime.
