When And Where Was Paul Gascoigne Born?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Paul Gascoigne was born in Gateshead near Newcastle on 27 May 1967.

Gateshead is on the south side of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle Upon Tyne, which is on the north of the river.  The two cities are linked by two bridges.

One of the best known landmarks of the area is the Angel of the North, a large sculpture which has succeeded in making Gateshead better known.  The sculpture can be seen from the A1, the main road into Gateshead as well as from the main East Coast railway line.

Paul Gascoigne (Gazza) grew up in Dunstun, which is a particularly deprived part of the Gateshead area.  He is a former footballer who is best known for his great footballing talent and his colourful character and life, as well as for the tears that followed being booked in the 1990 World Cup semi final between England and Germany.  It was his second yellow card and would have meant he would have missed the final had England progressed that far.

He signed for Newcastle in 1983 as an apprentice and made his first team debut in 1985.  After 107 appearances for Newcastle, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 1988.  His first England appearance for England came later that year against Denmark.
