In the year, 1560, graphite was discovered near Borrowdale in England and that provided the raw material for pencils. The documented proof about who invented the first pencil goes back to England to a man named Conrad Gesner in 1565. But we must understand that the pencil in various forms had been in use before that and European crafts men made these pencils in forms other than we know today.
