The cheapest way to fix it is if you have a friend or know someone who has recently upgraded to Vista (by installation or with a new pc) and will let you have the old disc & product key for either '98 or XP (XP would be better).  You can then load their disc to upgrade your system and use their old product key to register with Microsoft.  If they ask any questions (which they will probably not) tell them you bought the old pc and programmers from that person.

So you so much you sweatheart. I had to do a systems restore and didn't realize I needed a product key until it was too late and it had been rubbed off the case. I hope the good Lord fills your cup to overflowing. My son has wanted a laptop forever & I got this one cheap so it was like an early christmas gift but I was afraid it was going to be completely useless. Bless you, bless you, bless you!
