What Did Poor Men And Women Wear In The Victorian Age?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

People back then, if they could would make their own clothing. If they could get wool or cotton and had a loom they could make clothes. You should be able to find more out if you go to www.wikipedia.org and type in loom and other words there too. Hope this helps, good luck.

I really don't know much about that era, but I think if you type in victorian clothing in wikipedia you might find something there about how they were made, and how they were bought and sold, I really am sorry about not being able to help more.

They would have made their own clothing or depend on the 'discarded' clothing donated by the wealthier.  Children and maybe even women may have had to go barefoot if shoes were too costly.  And may not have a winter coat- not a good one at least.

Type in victorian era fashion and see if there is a link on it that would help. Also victorian men's clothing. But you may not be able to find a lot of info on this. I tried typing in poverty in victorian era also. But the same holds true. A poor man would wear whatever his wife or mother/sister etc could sew for him using whatever materials they could afford. He would not have had all the extras like a top hat, vest, waistband (cummerbund) etc. He would have had a simple pants and shirt, maybe a jacket and shoes, and old hat. Also his clothing may be donated by the wealthier people. Men would have had farming jobs, factory or warehouse jobs. Unless he was lucky and got hired to be a servant or driver for a rich family then he would have nicer clothing to represent the family he worked for well. Try typing in victorian era, etc and see what comes up.

Poor Victorian women would usually wear either something they made themselves or something they could afford. They usually only ever wore one thing as their other dress would be for special occasions.
