What Is A Meteorite?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Meteorites are bodies of matter that are traveling at great speed throughout space.  The number of all meteorites in the Solar System is countless.  They are usually chunks of rock or metal, flying through the numerous layers of space.

When these bodies of matter enter the Earth's atmosphere, friction causes them to grow hotter and even brighter.  All the small meteorites burn away with the immense effect of friction whereas the bigger meteorites fall to the surface of the Earth.

The crater hollows that these big meteorites cause after falling on the Earth are found all over the world.  A meteorite, which probably weighed more than a hundred tons is believed to have fallen near Winslow, Arizona in the United States several thousand years ago.  The crater thus resulting from the fall is called the Barringer crater, which is about one mile across and over five hundred feet deep.

A meteorite is a meteor that has entered the earth's atmosphere, giving it the designation meteor-"ite". There are no meteorites in space, they are meteors.
