What Roman Catholic Churches Are Found In Phoenix, Arzona, United States?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In order to locate Roman Catholic parishes in Phoenix, Arizona, it is best to contact the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. There are presently 47 Catholic churches functioning in the greater Phoenix area, including traditionalist and "independent" Catholic communities. The most prominent traditional parish is Queen of the Holy Rosary, formerly known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where Mass is still celebrated in Latin. The parish also rejects other changes and reforms proposed by the Second Vatican Council.

The largest church in the diocese is the St. Simon & Jude Cathedral. The cathedral was established in 1953 and is home to the chair of the Bishop. Weekday mass is celebrated twice each day, at 6:15am and 8:15am, while Sunday Mass is celebrated four times in English and twice in Spanish.

The diocese was founded in 1969, when the Vatican divided it from the Diocese of Tuscon in southern Arizona. The current Catholic bishop for the city of Phoenix is Thomas James Olmsted, who was appointed in 2003.
