A log cabin is a type of small sized dwelling which is structured completely out of logs. Basically it is a simplistic version of a log house, they both used to be built in villages and also in regions which were rich in timber resources, although mainly seen in the Northern Hemisphere.
Log cabins were originally built in the United States of America by Swedish immigrants in what is the present day south eastern part of Pennsylvania around the 1640s, and they were not actually used by the English settlers who first came to the United States. Today there exist some log cabins which can be traced back to the eighteenth century, although they are used for other purposes such as animal shelter, out buildings for coops etc.

The Swedish settlers, among many nationalities to set up small & isolated colonies in North America, especially in the Middle Atlantic States. One Swedish colony was set up on both sides of the lower Delaware River, about 100 miles north of it's emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. It was south of what would be Philadelphia and between what would eventually be New Jersey on the East shore and Penn's Woods on the West shore. In the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey, there is a town named Swedenborg, named for the early inhabitants.
