My German Shepherd Dog Is Pregnant For The First Time And Has Started Digging Holes All Over The Yard. Is She Nesting??? Is This Normal?

She has two other dogs to play with. We are feeding her Science Diet Dog Food. She also eats a lot of the dirt. She dug 14 holes in a 15' by 6' foot area and then more in the back yard. They are small holes but very deep. She gets plenty of attention and exercise. We are home all day with her.

There are other symptoms that are more important to determine that your dog is pregnant.  Is it getting fat or are its teats getting harder day by day and vulva swelling up? It will also start showing temperature variations and behavioral changes. It will either become more loving and attention seeking or lazier and exhausted. But your described symptom is one of the signs for sure. Observe it more keenly if it digs hole and tries to sit on them as well. Congratulations and take more care of your dog if it is pregnant.

Getvet, thanks so much for your answer. She is definitely pregnant and is due in about 3 weeks, but we didn't understand her digging so much all of a sudden. We built her welping box today and she loves it, so maybe she will stop the digging. Yes, we put pig rails around the inside.

Here's a site that you can go to and find out about the gestation and behavior of your dog while pregnant. Www.wikipedia.org, and type in German shepherd dog.
In the contents area, you should see descriptions about the animal you are wanting to know things about. Hope this helps, good luck.
