Selenium is found in many plant based foods but the selenium content of a salad or vegetable depends on the selenium content of the soil in which it was grown. This important trace element can also can be found in some meats and seafood. Animals that eat grains or plants that were grown in selenium-rich soil have higher levels of selenium in their muscle. Some nuts are also sources of selenium.
Selenium content of foods can vary. For example, Brazil nuts may contain as much as 544 micrograms of selenium per 25 grams. This is almost eight times the recommended daily dose of selenium. Nuts may contain far less selenium, it depends on where they were produced.
Tuna, beef and cod also have moderate amounts of selenium – an average serving of any of these foods provides about half the recommended daily dose. Selenium is also found in pasta and noodles, cottage cheese and whole eggs.
