Thier are better ways to discipline you child then to spank them you should put them on time out and or take away one of their favorite toys for awhile.

It depends on many things. Such as:
Age of child: You wouldn't spank a two year old as hard as you would spank an eight year old.
What you use to spank the child: You wouldn't use the same force with a belt as you would if spanking with your hand.
Gender: You wouldn't spank a girl as hard as you would spank a boy

The spanking shouldn't leave a mark that lasts more than a couple of hours.
The best way to avoid spanking too hard is by not spanking until you are calm and in control of your emotions. If you are mad or frustrated, send the child to his/her room until you are ready to administer the spanking.

Test it first on your own leg. Adjust to age, not gender, unless over 13

Age and gender make a difference. One smack for each year is a good idea. If it is over clothes much harder, use a paddle or a belt. If it is bare bottom for a girl hard enough to make them cry using your hand or a hairbrush. If it is a boy harder with a paddle or a belt until they cry, spank the boy harder than the girl.

That's a really good one-rosy red and warm as sunshine-true too!. Well my Dad had a novel way which didn't involve smacking-but made sure i still received a VERY sore bottom!!..guess how?, he placed me across his knee and with a small piece of sandpaper rub my bare bottom, hard, for about 20-30 seconds, it wasn't bad at first but after a few minutes i thought my bottom was on fire!!. Then in the corner hands on my head saying "sorry Daddy" with my poor red sore burning like hell little bottom waving about to try and cool it down-never worked!. After half an hour he offered cream (which was embarrassing poking your bare bum out to your Dad at the age i was) but gladly accepted-anything to ease the stinging!!, besides it was silly being shy he often saw my bare bum around the house!!. It was sore a good few days after but i was a good girl and obeyed him-who wouldn't?!. I wanted a cuddle (as i loved him a lot) and it worked a treat. As for how hard he rubbed hard that's for sure!!.
