Well the above question is quite general and does not have an accurate answer unless the region of the world is specified. The choices and buying power among individuals from different parts of the world are different and hence the most commonly selling cars in different parts of the world will be different. Even within the USA the concentration of Japanese and American cars are different in different states. For example, Volkswagen is the most common private car in Norway while the most common car on Indian roads is probably the Tata Indica.
Until 1996 the Ford Taurus was the most common car in America. However, after this Ford incorporated a dramatic new styling and this really hurt the popularity of the Taurus. The new style also included an odd-looking oval window at the back which was not liked by customers. Since then it lost its spot for top sales and the Honda accord took its place.
Ford Focus was the best-selling Ford car in Europe, UK, and Ireland. It also had highest sales in Greece in 2006.
