What Does Marley Mean?

Marley is defined as sleet or soil that is related to marl in the Yorkshire area. It is also the name of three places. The first one is a quaint hamlet in Deal in Kent in England. Also in Kent is Marley which is located in the civil parish of Harrietsham which is situated in the Maidstone district. Lastly in Maryland in the USA, Marley station is a popular shopping mall in Glen Burnie in Anne Arundel County.

Marley is also a common surname. The most famous person with the surname Marley is of course the internationally acclaimed reggae musician Bob Marley. He hailed from Jamaica and was a gifted songwriter, singer and guitarist. He popularized reggae music which heretofore was popular only in its native Jamaica. He was a staunch Rastafarian and is hailed by many as a prophet of this religion. He died in 1982.
