What Protects The Lungs?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The rib cage and cartilage protect it from mechanical damage and the upper airways protects it from infections or toxins.  Cilia (small, hairlike projections) in the airway prevent infectious microbes from getting to the lungs by catching them in mucous that is produced in the airway and then propelling them out of the body with "wave-like" movements (they catch the germs and move them back up to the mouth/nose where they can be removed). Hope this helps.
