If it is just a few times it could be stress or something he ate like to much treats. If it continues it could be a virus that will pass or something as bad as parvo. If it continues you should have the vet check it out.

Lots of reasons some more serious than others. If there is blood present or your dog is lethargic, has pale gums get him to a vet right away. Dehydration as a result of diarrhea is more dangerous than the diarrhea itself so make sure you give him plenty of water. Its also a good idea to stop feeding for 1 day, this will not starve or harm your dog but it will let his bowls recover a bit. If after 1 day of no food he still has diarrhea, get to a vet immediately.
