The tallest free-standing mountain rise in all of the world, Mount Kilimanjaro is located in the northeastern part of Tanzania, Africa. Kilimanjaro, or Kilima Njaro, in the native language of Swahili means "shining mountain" and rises to a height of fifteen thousand feet, from the base, with its' highest peak, the highest peak in all of Africa, reaching a height of nineteen thousand three hundred and fourty feet. Although not currently active, Mount Kilimanjaro is a large stratovalcano. Local legend has it that there was activity around one hundred and seventy years ago but, today, no new activity is expected. Mount Kilimanjaro is visited by tourists all around the world looking to climb this majestic mountain, with six different routes marked out, and to reach the snow capped peaks. However, the glaciers, that have rested atop of the mountain for the past eleven thousand seven hundred years, are now, sadly, disappearing.
