How Do I Clean My Cooker?

Answer Question

If you have a gas hob, you should take off the surrounds (the metal part that the pans stand on) and wash in detergent or the dishwasher. Clean the rest of the hob with a cream based cleaner (nothing scratchy.) If there is any glass on the hob, it's better to use a specialist hob scraper – the shop where you bought the cooker can advise. If the control knobs at the front of the cooker are detachable, they can be washed too (mind you don't lose any small parts, though.)

For cleaning the oven, you should check the manual before starting, to see if any cleaning materials or products are a bad idea (a lot of oven surfaces don't like scouring pads, for instance.) Oven shelves should be removed and sprayed with specialist oven cleaner, preferably one recommended by the manufacturer of your oven (you need to wear gloves.) You can spray the same cleaner inside the oven and leave for an hour or as indicated by the directions for use. Later, wash it off with a cloth.
