Could Women Be Druids?

    Little is really known about the Druids so we must turn to archaeology, classical and Irish sources for any information regarding them.
    Women could hold office and play a significant role in pre-Roman British and Irish society.

    Classical sources mention Dryades or Druidesses, who held powerful positions as opposed to Greek women who were deviod of any power in politics or outside the home.

    Plutrach mentions Camma, a priestess of the goddess Brigit. It is accepted that she was a Druidess.
    There are numberous references to goddesses in Irish and Welsh literature and oral tradtions.
    Tlachtga the daughter of an Irish Druid is said to have been a Druid. The Hill of Tlachtga Hill of Ward) county Meath is said to be her burial place.
    The Brehon Laws afforded women many rights including the office of judge and lawyer.

    Many scholars believe that the evidence points to a range of social, political and religious roles for women.
