How do I plant an Avocado seed?

My mother puts a toothpick in each side and lets it hang over a glass of water. Then places it in the window sill. The roots start growing in the water, just like a cutting from a plant. Make sure you use a fairly short glass, because the seed is heavy and will end up tipping the glass over.

I have successfully grown an avocado seed and planted it in the back yard.  It is now about 3 foot high and doing well.  Push 3 toothpicks into the large end of the avocado seed, just high enough to allow the bottom of the seed to touch the water in a glass.  When you have roots about 3" to 4" long you can plant it outside.  If you have frost be sure to protect it by covering it with newspaper during the winter.  Dig a hole about 2 feet in diameter and about 1 foot deep.  Add some good garden soil.  Plant the avocado and keep it watered until it takes hold.

Id say put it in some miracle growpotting soil and give it lots of water, light, and warmth. I would plant it how it would grow in the wild, plants of all kinds have survived millions of years without humans help, they will live long after as well, and they still do it today so i would just plant it as if it was in the ground in the wild, so that's my advice :)
