Christmas has a significant place in many countries of the world. Christmas marks the Birth of the Christ and is entirely a religious festival. Though the celebration of Christmas is limited only to the Christian community, it is marked with respect in other religions. Being a Muslim, our community has a very high regard for this Day. And it is celebrated as a National Holiday in our country. We have one similar tradition which we celebrate each year, called Eid Milad Un Nabi, that marks the birth of our Prophet (P.B.U.H). It is a day of religious fervour and celebration for us just like Christmas is for Christians.

Delightful and informative contribution. Thank you so much.
I am a Christian and I don't celebrate Christmas, it has nothing to do with Jesus. Christmas was started when the catholic church supposedly Christianized some pagans that worshiped the sun god during the winter solstice, that is when the sun is farthest away from earth, which happened to be Dec.25th. The pagans didn't want to lose there day of worshiping their sun god and the catholics didn't want to lose their converts so the pagans got their day of Dec. 25th and the catholics reworded it by saying they were not worshiping the sun god but the SON OF GOD. It was known as Christs Mass and the protestants changed it to Christmas. The bible teaches that the scriptures are inspired by God and guide the Christian into ALL good works, if Christmas was a good work it would be mentioned in the scriptures also if God wanted you to know His Sons true birthday it would also be in the scriptures. The very verse that says that the shepherds were watching their flock at night proves that it was not in the winter but during the spring or summer months.
Since I am a 100 % disabled veteran, I only celebrate it if I have the money. I have a step son from my first marriage, and he was only one year old when we got married. He is 19 now, but I try my best to get him something for Christmas, even if it means I have to do without the basic essentials.

I only celebrate Christmas in the sense that I spend it with friends each year. For me, being invited into their homes during a time that is so important to them and being included as a part of their families, is a celebration for me.
As for myself, I celebrate Chanukah. We don't have a celebration each of the eight nights. My family will get together during one of the nights, and we enjoy traditional food that we have only at that time. We also exchange gifts as Christians do.

I have so many questions about the Jewish traditions. I have a hard time separating the culture/ethnicity from the religion--I don't understand it so well, but I would like to. Like why do we see it written Hannukhah and Chanukah? Just one question. Meanwhile, I think it is so great that the holiday seasons can bring us together with the people in our lives who we are about--who get it. I know that sounds like a platitude or some lame phrase perhaps-- but really, that IS what our celebrations are. Celebrations are for the living among us. Thanks be for a reason to gather together and celebrate each other and life--for whatever it brings... Thanks so much.
People spell Chanukah many different ways, and I don't know why except that some have trouble pronouncing the "ch" in the germanic form.
I too had many questions about the Jewish traditions and found a few really good sites that were quite explicit regarding the Jewish holidays and traditions on line.
My Jewish "Aunt" and "Uncle" were frequently at our house but were never quite as forthcoming as I would have liked when I asked them questions. I always assumed that it was because I wasn't part of their "community" proper.
Regardless, I learned a lot from my aunt and uncle as well as their daughters, and I will always be greatful for that.

No, my family and I don't celebrate Christmas. We take that time off to just get together with friends and family. The main Vietnamese holiday that we celebrate is Vietnamese New Year, called Tet in Vietnamese. It's a very big deal and there are big celebrations everywhere around the city.

I live in the usa, and i do celebrate christmas on the traditional dec,25, as the birth of jesus christ. The actual birth of christ, is a different time, but is still celebrated in dec. Christmas actually started out as a pagan holiday. It has evolved to modern times, as a christian holiday.

I also live in the U.S.A and celebrate Christmas. Me, my brother and sister wake up early. Then go downstairs look at how many presents there are. Then we rush upstairs wake up my mom and dad.(Which isn't really good for my mom or dad!!!!!). It takes us about an hour before we can open are gifts. Because we have to get the right presents to the right person. My dad has to get his video camera, camera and put the Christmas music on. Also the parents have to get their coffee. Sometimes my dad has to wrap gifts up at the last second. Well there's my answer!!!

I celebrate the coming of Christ which is considered Christmas to me. Our family celebrates Christmas by going to midnight mass on Christmas eve, then strait to bed, next we wake up a couple of hours later and open presents.

Christmas is a tough time for me. I realize the seriousness in it's meaning but I'm stunned how quickly we forget when January comes. I kept a letter from a patient in a nursing home that said "where is everyone the rest of the year". I believe Christmas is every day because the words of Christ apply every day. Amazingly I can't find anywhere where Christmas is re-celebrated in the Bible. I also can't find anyplace where gifts were exchanged. Weirder yet I can't find evidence that the wise men actually arrived with their gifts-but at least the Christ child received gifts as we do on our Birthdays. For this reason Birthdays are a Big to-do in our Family. Christmas of course is highly recognized on this special 'chosen' day in our Family as well. As for gifts-we aim for stocking stuffers and try to send the larger ones to those in need. Needless to say our opinion is not popular. (See Comments: I stand corrected on the wise men)Sorry

Read Matthew 2:1-12 - it talks about the wise men opening their treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and presenting them to the Christ child. It doesn't actually say that they brought gifts with them - I wonder how the gifts got there? Is it assumed that they brought them? Don't know.
Hi desertkid. You did your homework. I looked at a respectable translation from the Blue Letter Bible and the word 'presented' was used. I stand corrected. I don't know where I derived my information from on this note??? Thanks, Dave
Isn't the whole idea of gift giving from a biblical/Christian standpoint about the gift of the savior to the world? And isn't the exchange - our love and gratitude for this? The gifts we exchange each year with those we love is meant as a metaphor, I believe, for that ultimate gift giving of the first Christmas--at least from the viewpoint of christianity.
Hi I 'm in Europe so I celebrate Christmas even i'm not this religion
there are many religion in the world but the main is do what we are interested , believed and do the way that we like, I think every religion is good if we understand it, as they taught us to do the right things.

Yes, I celebrate Christmas not with elaborate gifts, but with giving of myself and time. Also, as Jesus said, we should love and give to those in need. I don't think one has to be Christian to see the significance of Jesus' most powerful words. "Whatever you do to the least of your brothers, you did it or me." So Christmas is a time of helping those less fortunate: The lonely, disenfranchised, forgotten, sick and elderly. It is also a time for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus. And a time for non-Christians to relate to his universal message of giving of oneself for the sake of the greater good of all.

Yes, I celebrate Christmas by celebrating the birth of Christ which happened many years ago. Even though the exact date of His birth is not December 25th, Christians have chosen this date as the day to recognize His birth. My family gets together on Christmas Day for a special traditional meal, we exchange gifts, and share a lot of good memories. Our church gets involved with many activities like the "shoe box ministry" which is filling a shoe box with many small personal items and giving to people in need at the Salvation Army. We also have an "angel tree" which is decorated with "angel name cards" of children who need or want a special Christmas item. We pick a name and buy the present of their choice. Another activity is giving out food boxes to many of the homeless members of the community. I enjoy this season because people appear to be more friendly and courteous. We should practice this attitude all year, not just during the Christmas season (myself included).

Hi desertkid!
What a wonderful answer!
When I was a very little girl we always had a house full of people, realted or not, to the point that there was no room to walk through the rooms to get to the kitchen! What a good feeling that memory gives me!
We always did a lot with the church, the Girl Scouts, Faith Lutheran Jr./Sr. High School, our daughter's school and the Interfaith Hospitality Network (feeding and housing homeless folks) all year round, but it was all very special when it was the Christmas season.

So many wonderful practices of love come from this time of celebration. It is true that in the receipt of generosity, (which we often experience in religious celebration)we are moved to be generous ourselves. Thank you for sharing this. God bless you and yours.
Hi amore01!
I personally celebrate and am grateful for every single day.
Yes, we celebrate Christmas (though not as elaborately as before my MS diagnosis) doing the typical Italian Christmas Eve, having only fish and spaghetti for dinner ... With lots of friends and relatives. We also celebrate birthdays!
Thanks to you all for allowing me to share, and have a WONDERFUL day!!!

I absolutely celebrate Christmas as it's part of my religion celebration. We don't really mind about the presence of a Christmas Tree at home, I mean without a Christmas Tree we can still celebrate it gloriously. Christmas to us means time to gather around with the whole family members and we always spend two days to visit our relatives, from home-to-home wishing everybody a merry Christmas. It's so much fun (with so many cookies they always offer) :P

Of course, I celebrate Christmas because it is a tradition in our religion of Catholicism. And because according to The study, it is the birthday of Christ so we must celebrate it whole-heartedly.

I celebrate the birth of Christ each and every day, but also his death and resurrection. I celebrate it by living joyfully in obedience and trust in Christ, and through daily offering of my life as a spiritual sacrifice to God.
At this time of year, I gather with family and friends to remember him in more public ways, but there is nothing intrinsically 'special' about the day.

I love Christmas. I love all the lights and decorating the tree and me and my mom collect those big santas. We usually go to my aunt's (dad's side) on Christmas eve and then have dinner with my aunt (mom's side) on Christmas.

Yes we do celebrate Christmas and that too with a lot of enthusiasm. Jesus, according to the Koran, is one of the prophets sent by god and this is why he is highly respected by us.
The point is not when was Jesus born. No doubt nobody is sure when he was born. But the point is that we have to celebrate his birth whichever day we celebrate it.
