Is Is Possible For A 4-5 Month Old Male To Get A Female Pregnant?
Is there always locking of the two dogs when the male has been inside the female? My 9 month old puppy is pregnant and I don't understand when it could have happened. Is there a way to termintate the pregnancy without spaying her?
Answers
So long as his testicles have dropped into the scrotum, a young male dog can get a female pregnant. There is not always a "tie" during mating, such events are called "slip" matings, and pregnancy can result although is less common than with a tie. If the mating has taken place within a few days a vet can give an injection to terminate the pregnancy, longer than a week and I think you would be looking at spaying her.
The other option is to let the pregnancy proceed, but reduce the size of the litter to just 1-3, so it is not too much strain on such a young mother. Many people would find it hard to do this.
