The word "repel" is a verb that means to keep away or to ward off. Repel can also refer to fight against something or to offer resistance against somebody or something. Repel can also mean a refusal to accept and in this sense to spurn or to turn away. It can be used to refer to the physical characteristics of something as being unable to mix or absorb something else. In the realm of Physics repel refers to the property of some thing to repel by presenting an opposing force. Synonyms of "repel" are rebuff, brush off, revolt, disgust, attract, push back, force back, snub etc.
Repel is taken from the Middle English word "repellen", taken from the Old French word "repeller" and derived from the Latin "repellere" meaning to drive.
