Where Do You Still Get The Red Squirrel In The UK?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Population of red squirrel in the UK has been dwindling since the introduction of the grey squirrel about 60 years ago.  Isolated red squirrel populations are still existent in southern England. This includes three islands in Poole Harbor, Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, at Thetford in Norfolk and at the Isle of Wight. The population has all but disappeared from Staffordshire. In Wales there are just a couple of thousand red squirrels remaining in scattered localities. Northern England too has a few but only in pockets where the Grey Squirrel has not yet settled.

Red squirrels are now largely confined to just Scotland and Ireland, though UK conservationists are trying to stop the rate of decline. There are three red squirrel refuges in the UK. They are in Kielder Forest in Northumberland, Penrith in Cumbria and an area of Merseyside woodland. There are less than   160,000 red squirrels left in the UK, as compared to the 2.5m grey squirrels.
