Who Were The Main Characters In "Fawlty Towers"�?

The most memorable character in this sitcom is of course Basil Fawlty himself, the wild-eyed, permanently stressed owner of Britain's worst-run seaside hotel. Created and played by John Cleese, Basil is paranoid, violent, insanely snobbish and, fundamentally, desperately unhappy. (When his wife Sybil, played by Prunella Scales, asks him why he is singing, he replies, "just my way of getting through the day, dear…Samaritans were engaged.") Sensible, vulgar Sybil is the perfect foil to Basil. The hotel staff consists of capable waitress Polly (co-author Connie Booth) mediocre chef Terry and, most famously, Andrew Sachs's Spanish waiter Manuel ("I know nothing, I am from Barcelona".) Manuel persists in being fond of Basil, who treats him like a punchbag and shows zero patience with Manuel's limited English ("Please, please try to understand before one of us dies…") There are also permanent hotel residents Miss Gatsby and Miss Tibbs, who always speak in unison, and an absent-minded retired Major (Ballard Berkely.)
