    Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle was born on 22 November 1890 and died on 9 November 1970. He was a French military leader as well as a well known statesman. In France he is commonly known as Général de Gaulle. He is known for his rich military and political career.

    He opted for a military career at a young age. He graduated from Saint-Cyr in the year 1912 and chose an infantry regiment as opposed to an elite corps.

    Then-Captain de Gaulle sustained grave injuries during World War I in March 1916. After being taken as a prisoner by the Germans, he tried to escape five times but was unsuccessful. After World War I, he went on to win the Virtuti Militari, which is the utmost Polish military decoration. De Gaulle was promoted to Commandant but he opted to return to France. He went on to have an active military and political career becoming the eighteenth President of the French Republic as well as the one hundred and fourty-ninth Prime Minister of France.
