India is not a Hindu country it is a secular country with a majority Hindu population; this is a huge difference.  India is home to over 154 million Muslims which is comparable to the Muslim population is Pakistan.  Also, Hindi is a language not a religion.  The difference between the populations are regional, a variety of different ethnic groups make up the region. Religion, language, food also vary but this would be true even if Pakistan was still apart of India.  Within India itself there are many cultural differences as you move from one province to the next.  Pakistan was created in 1947 so it is a relatively young nation, in my opinion it was created due to colonial (British) interference and meddling in political matters and was a huge mistake.

Pakistan was a part of India and was created in 1947 during the partition... Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim country whereas India is a secular country where majority of the population is Hindu. As Pakistan was created from India the culture and all resembles North India. The major language in Pakistan is Urdu, whereas in India it is Hindi (although there are like almost 20 other national languages.)

They are quite different and distinct from each other, though have some commons because, geographically adjacent to each other but differences are much stronger.
          Major differences are in
          Religion,
          Language,
          Food,
          Music,
          Race.
Search in Wikipedia "History or Pakistan" and it will be clear that for most part the time, they have remained different and distinct.
